Abaco was primarily settled by Loyalists from the Thirteen Colonies, who, at the time of the American Revolution, chose to retain their allegiance to the English Crown.  The Arts play a large role on Abaco. We are the home of many established artists including Marjolein Scott, renown for her painting on silk, Don Woods who works in wood and metal and Harriet Thompson Mackenzie who has revived the art of pine needle basket weaving. Annual art shows in
Marsh Harbour and on Elbow Cay attract visitors and residents alike.
Green Turtle Cay’s Roots Festival celebrates its nine generations of history, its famous artist Alton Lowe and its ties to Key West. Many settlements host Homecoming Days.
Elbow Cay has its annual Heritage Day. There are concerts by the Bahamas Concert Orchestra, by the local group Jes’us and by visiting musicians. The Abaco Ceramics studio in
Treasure Cay gives lessons. There are many casual painters for whom the plein air surroundings of Abaco are perfect.
